ABOUT BELA
“I photograph people experiencing something meaningful”
Bela Maranhão is a Brazilian photographer based in Rio de Janeiro, working with documentary weddings and combat sports.
At first, weddings and combat sports may seem like two very different worlds. To Bela, they are connected by the same human elements: emotion, presence, discipline, vulnerability, tension and release.
Sports have been part of her life for years. They shaped the way she observes people, reads situations, listens, recognizes fairness, respects boundaries and moves through different environments with attention and confidence. They taught her to notice what is happening beyond the obvious.
This is reflected in the way she photographs.
Her work is rooted in quiet observation, emotional depth and timeless imagery. With a discreet and unobtrusive presence, Bela photographs life as it happens, paying attention to what people feel, carry, hope for and reveal in moments they cannot fully control.
She is drawn to the moments between performance and intimacy. The silence before a ceremony, the movement of a dress, the tension before a fight, the tenderness of a gesture, the joy after a moment of release.
Across weddings and combat sports, her intention remains the same: to photograph what feels true.
